Bluejays Historic Season Comes to an end with 1st loss of the Season

Sunday, March 10th, 2013

Article By Nathan Kendall

The West Platte Bluejays exciting 2012-2013 season ended with a 70-46 loss at the hands of the Salisbury Panthers. The Bluejays played the game without leading scorer Adam Roe, who went down with a serious knee injury Thursday night against Iberia. It was a big loss for the Bluejays for the game. The injury meant that the Bluejays would rely a lot on 6-10 center Bryce Cashman. Who appeared up to the task early on.

In the 1st quarter the had 2 early turnovers that led to a quick 5-0 lead for Salisbury but the Bluejays answered with a 3 by Senior Matt Heili (playing in his final game). Followed by an offensive foul on Salisbury’s Elijah Asbury then a score by Bryce Cashman to tie the game 5-5. At the 3:47 mark of the 1st quarter the Bluejays took there first lead with a Cashman layup to put them up 9-7. The lead quickly disappeared with a 3 by Austin Wyatt who had 15 points in the 1st half. That was the closest the Bluejays came to the lead from that point on. Salisbury turned up the heat in the 2nd quarter forcing a total of 13 turnovers by the Bluejays in the half. The 2nd quarter is when the Bluejays had issues, Bryce Cashman picked up his 3rd foul so that sat him down for the rest of the half. Late in the half Salisbury’s head coach picked up a Technical Foul following a foul called on Lane Springer. So the Bluejays shot 4 free throws all of which were made by Sophomore Cody Guthrie to cut the Salisbury lead to 35-19. But a 3 pointer at the buzzer by Austin Wyatt turned back the Bluejays chance. Halftime score was Salisbury 38 Bluejays 19.

The 3rd quarter began with a Bluejay score Nathan Coulson (also playing in his final game). But that was quickly followed by Cashman’s 4th foul putting him on the bench for awhile. As soon as Cashman re-entered the ball game he threw down a big dunk to get the Bluejay fans on their feet. But just a couple minutes later Zachary Wyatt of Salisbury forced a turnover and had a dunk of his own on the other end to deflate the Bluejays comeback attempt. By the end of the 3rd quarter Salisbury had extended their lead to 54-25. The 4th quarter began with a turnover by Salisbury and then a quick 3 by Cody Guthrie. The quarter went back and forth for a little while. The Bryce Cashman picked up his 5th foul. So, that left the rest of the game to Colton Goodlet. The Bluejays slowly started to sub the seniors out of the ball game for the last time. First, Matt Heili then Logan Moose, Spencer Hudson, Nathan Coulson, and finally Dylan Guthrie. Those 5 players were a very big part of the success the team. As the game was coming to an end Kyle Hollingsworth hit a 3, followed by a 2 from Dillon Crockett, and a last second layup by Ben Heili to end the ball game. Salisbury was led in scoring by Austin Wyatt with 21 points and 20 from Austin Francis. While the Bluejays were led by Bryce Cashman who had 14 points and 10 rebounds. With the end of this season the Bluejays finished 30-1. And a 2nd place finish in Class 2. Next season will be another exciting one. With Adam Roe set to return along with Bryce Cashman, Cody Guthrie, and Colton Goodlet. Next season will be a fun one and good luck to the Bluejays baseball team now as they prepare to start the year.

Courtside News - West Platte vs. Iberia. Bluejays Stifle Rangers, but Key Player Leaves Early with Injury

Friday, March 8th, 2013

120611westplattevslawsonbbb02120611westplattevslawsonbbb01

By Nathan Kendall
The Bluejays semi final game proved costly late in the ball game. With 1:35 left in the game Adam Roe drove to the basket as physical contact was made (foul called by the official). As he fell to the floor holding his knee the arena went silent.
Long before the injury the Bluejays had a battle on there hands. The Iberia Rangers were keeping the Bluejays offense in check throughout the whole 1st half. Bryce Cashman picked up 2 fouls in the 1st quarter and limited him to 7 minutes in 1st half. The Bluejays struggled to get there offense going through the 1st half. But the Bluejays defense was stout even without Cashman through the 2nd quarter they held the Rangers to 39% shooting but, the Bluejays kept the game close even only themselves shooting 30%. The Bluejays never led in the 1st half. The Rangers had a little foul trouble themselves. Their 6 foot 9 inch freshman Dexter Frisbie picked up his 2nd foul in the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd half started out strong for the Bluejays. Forced a turnover that led to a Cashman lay in to tie the game and then a Spencer Hudson 3 pointer put the Bluejays ahead for good. The Bluejays would slowly extend their lead then sure enough a little run by the Rangers to pull within 2 or 3 points. Then the Bluejays would extend it back out. To make things worse for the Rangers Dexter Frisbie picked up his 3rd and 4th fouls to put them in a bind. After 3 quarters the Bluejays had a 37-32 lead.
The 4th quarter started strong for the Rangers Dickey knocked down a jumper followed by Cashman’s hook shot, then a 3 pointer by Isaac Minnick to cut the lead to 39-37. This is when Adam Roe scored 2 consecutive buckets. Then with 4:13 left in the ballgame Frisbie fouls out of the contest. The Bluejays started to play the game in the paint after that. This is where the injury happened. The Bluejays played just fine after that without Adam who left with the knee injury. The Bluejays put the exclamation point on the game with a steal by Matt Heili and the dunk by Bryce Cashman on the offensive end to put the game away. The Bluejays won the ballgame 57-48. To advance to the title game to play Salisbury who is 29-1. Leading scorer for the Bluejays was Adam Roe with 20 points and 14 rebounds and for the Rangers Darrien Dickey had 22.
